October 28, 1925 – November 2, 2009
It is with deep regret that the family of Vera Moeder-Eyre announces her passing from this world on Monday, November 2, 2009. Vera passed away after a valiant fight against cholangiocarcinoma (bile duct cancer) which had rapidly moved into her bones. Sadly, she celebrated her 84th birthday and the last days of her life in the hospital, watched over lovingly around the clock by her children and their spouses.
She was a vibrant woman, devout Catholic and parishioner at Nativity Catholic Church, dedicated to serving God, family, and friends. Vera volunteered extensively at the Church, was a long-time member of the Catholic Daughters, a lector at Mass, and a faithful blood donor. She was married to Lawrence J. Moeder for 46 wonderful years until he passed in 1992. She was married to Richard Eyre for 2 years until he also passed on.
Everyone who met Vera was impressed by her vivacious personality and high energy level. Up until the end of September 2009, Vera commuted the freeways from Torrance to Huntington Beach to work 3 days a week. She was a part-time employee at Melmat Inc. , a manufacturer and distributor of carrying cases and containers, where she was employed for 35 years.
She will be sorely missed by all who knew her but especially by her family. Born in Hoxie, Kansas she is survived by six sisters: Vivian, Agnes, Mary Ellen, Alice, Eileen, and Millie. She moved to California in the 40's and lived in the South Bay ever since. Vera is survived by her six children and their spouses: Bill and Patricia Moeder, Suzanne and David Henry, Melinda and Gary Biddle, Sheila and Patrick Kuhlman, Roxanne Moeder, and Kurt and Nicole Moeder. She had seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren: Kim Opferman, Scott Cadenhead, Lisa Moeder, Joseph Dutko, Jason Biddle, Samantha Moeder, Grace Moeder, Paige Opferman, Daniel Opferman, J.T. Dutko, and Shelby Dutko. Vera was also known as " Mother Vee" and " Grammie Vee" to many friends & neighbors.
Visitation is 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. with a vigil at 7:00 p.m. on Monday November 9th at Rice Mortuary in Torrance (310) 792-7599. Mass is 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday November 10th at Nativity Catholic Church 1447 Engracia Ave Torrance. Interment is the following day, Wednesday November 11th at Holy Cross Cemetery, Culver City.
In lieu of flowers the family would appreciate donations made in Vera's memory to the American Cancer Society
